Intervertebral disc disease represents the most complexing medicosurgical disorders. The. discovery by Mixter and Barr(1934) that an intraspinal protrusion of the intervertebral disc is frequently the cause of lumbago and sciatica was outstandingly important because it might provides a rationale for the treatment of backache.
The author has reviewed 123 cases of disc herniation at Chungnam National University Hospital from 1974 to 1976 and following conclusions were obtained.
1. Among the 123 cases of lumbar disc herniation, age distribution was disclosed as foll¡þows ; 30. 9% in 4th decade; 27.6% in 5th decade ; 21. 1% in 3rd decade; 11.4% in 6th decade.
2. The percentile of disc herniation between Ls, vertebrae was 53. 8% :32. 7% between L; S, vertebrae. About 12.5% of lumbar disc herniation disclosed multiple lesions.
3. A contrast myelography was a valuable procedure for the diagnosis of level of disc lesion and for differential diagnosis with other diseases.
